As global plastic restrictions accelerate, coated paper, laminated paper, aluminum foil paper, and
biodegradable coated paper are undergoing a major reshuffle in the food packaging sector.
Traditional coated and laminated papers remain dominant in disposable tableware and paper
cups due to their strong oil/water resistance and cost advantages. Aluminum foil paper continues
to hold a steady position in high-end baking and fast-food packaging, thanks to its superior
barrier properties and flavor retention.
However, tightening environmental policies in the EU and China are putting pressure on
conventional plastic-coated papers because of recycling difficulties. Market demand is rapidly
shifting toward biodegradable coated paper (e.g., PLA, PBS coatings). This material offers similar
performance while being industrially compostable, making it a core alternative to traditional
options. Although costs remain high, leading manufacturers are ramping up production
capacity, marking a critical phase in the industry’s green transition.
